What better way to celebrate Halloween than to visit an historic cemetery and tour the grounds? Especially when the narrated tour includes tales of the cemetary’s most famous residents. Take in the architecture, gardens, sculptures and wind your way back in time as the stories of the past come to life. And, as dusk turns to darkness see if the spirits join you on your tour!

Starting as a public burial ground with only 6 acres in 1850, Oakland Cemetery was designed as a rural garden cemetary. By 1872, it had expanded to 48 acres. Loved ones tending to family plots made Oakland Cemetery a popular destination for carriage rides and picnics. Much of the care and devotion that went into maintaining the plots caused the formation of small gardens throughout the cemetary. And, Atlanta’s first greenhouse was established at Oakland Cemetery in 1870. The evolution of those gardens, sculptures and architecture has transformed Oakland Cemetery into what we see today.

So, don’t miss out on the chance to see Oakland Cemetery after dark… if you dare.

When: October 24, 25, and 26, 2008

Where: Oakland Cemetery

Parking: Parking is limited, so carpool if you can. Or, take Marta to the King Memorial Station.

Cost: $15 per adult, $5 per child 12 and under
