The Setting: Proving once again that good pizza can come from unlikely places, Hearth Pizza Tavern makes its home at the opposite end of a strip mall that holds a Whole Foods grocery. They offer table, booth and bar seating indoors. And, a small patio with tables is off to the side. A wooden screen and huge red umbrellas protect diners from the nearby road.
The Staff: Friendly
The Food: Light, fluffy and delicate, this is everything I usually hate in a pizza crust. But, somehow, Hearth Pizza Tavern takes these wonderful bread qualities and turn them into a pizza crust that really works. Their pizza dough is made with 100% organic flour fortified with wheat germ for flavor. Fire roasting is key to their success.
On two different visits, we’ve seen great consistency in four pizzas. The high heat of a fired pizza oven adds good color and char to what could otherwise be a doughy mess when tomato sauce and toppings are added. All four of the pizzas we’ve sampled have been delightfully crisp, a little chewy, and nicely charred with dark golden dough bubbles dotting the surface of the crust.
Current Favorites:
Ring of Fire: Garlic chili oil, thin-sliced chorizo, pickled cherry peppers, caramelized onions and cremini mushrooms.
Custom Built: Mozzarella, fontinella, roasted cremini mushrooms and caramelized onion.

Current Favorite Cocktail: Fox Bros’ Watermelon Margarita
What makes this margarita so special? It’s subtle, it’s fresh, and it’s soooo easy to drink. The fresh watermelon juice with a tiny splash of sugar syrup, a squeeze of lime and just the right amount of tequila are all that’s needed to make this perfect summer cocktail. This margarita comes as close to perfection as a margarita can. In my opinion, tequila has a tendency to overpower a cocktail. But, that is not the case here. This lovely version is all about the fresh watermelon juice and letting the summer-fresh flavor shine.
Now, in all fairness, I will admit that margaritas aren’t my favorite cocktail. But, I love this one at Fox. Bros BBQ!!
((Fox Bros. will be offering watermelon margaritas this summer as a cocktail special))

Ridiculously buttery and flaky, these will never fall in the healthy foods category. But, for an occasional bite, Bojangles’ sweet potato pies are an indulgent fast food treat.
Heavily doused with a sugar cinnamon glaze, the contrast of salty pie crust against this super sweet glaze… YUM!
