Palomilla's Grill House — Another Visit

On this visit, we ate:

Masas De Cerdo — Chunks of tender pork deep fried and topped with onions stewed in garlic sauce.

The perfectly golden brown and crisp deep fried pork chunks were still incredibly moist, tender and flavorful.  It’s incredible that the interior of each pork chunk remains so moist and luscious given the crisp outer shell.  We’ve orded this on a number of occasions.  And, it’s always been near-perfect.  The one oddity is the stewed nature of the onions.  I’d love to see a bit more golden brown color on the onions.  Not only for plate appeal, but, also for the added flavor of carmelized onions.  It would really elevate the dish.

Chicharron de Pollo al Ajillo — Sauteed chicken topped with a stewed mixture of onions, green & red peppers, and garlic.

This is the first time we’ve tried this dish.  And, it was a winner!  The chicken breast was sauteed to a perfect golden brown exterior with a moist, tender interior.   Seemingly blended with the stewed peppers, onions and garlic at the last moment, this is the Cuban equivalent of comfort food.  There was a good amount of garlicy chicken broth to flavor the white rice that usually goes uneaten.

Cons — In our experience, the black beans have always been a bit bland at Palomilla’s.  We usually eat a bite or two and then push them aside.   And, if you ask for a bit of mojo on the side, you are served a thimble-sized condiment cup of watery/milky sauce that bares little resemblance to the mojo that I’ve been served in Miami.  We were also billed 75 cents for this.

Wallander

Wallander — PBS — May 10, 17, 31, 2009 — 9:00pm

This 3 part series based on the novels by Swedish author Henning Mankell begin this Sunday.  Henning Mankell couldn’t have asked for more than Kenneth Branagh’s brilliant portrayal of his character Kurt Wallander.  Heavy with emotion, this unique glimpse into the life of rural Sweden gives us an unprecedented view of a world across the ocean that is both like our own…  and, yet, different.

Stunning landscapes and cinematography are the icing on the cake for this award winning British 3 part film.

Marlow's Tavern

The Setting:  Just inside 285 on La Vista Road, the entrance is a bit odd.  You walk into what appears to be a hotel lobby.  If you walk forward, you’re in the bar.  But, if you turn off to the left, you’ll find plenty of booth and table seating.   Next time, maybe we’ll find our way to the rooftop to enjoy the music (it’s piped into the restaurant, too).  On Thursdays, they have four musicians.  On Fridays and Saturdays, they have three.

The Staff:  Friendly

The Food:  On our first visit, we chose a “Cuban Style” sandwich and a “Steak House” burger.  The burger was the clear winner. But, both were tasty.

Slow Roasted Pressed Pork “Cuban Style”  — While billed as slow roasted, the pork was unexpectedly tough.  The chimmichurri added a good dose of flavor.  And, luckily, I opted to leave off the Chipotle BBQ sauce.  I can’t imagine this sauce adding to the taste of the sandwich.

“Steak House” Burger — REALLY good!  We were happily surprised to find our burger perfectly cooked.  Topped with a marinated portabello, swiss cheese, carmelized onion and Maker’s Mark steak sauce, this burger sounds overwhelming.  But, the toppings are nicely proportioned.  We’ll be back for this burger again!

Is it your first time at Marlow’s Tavern?  If so, you might be rewarded with a free order of house-made potato chips topped with a really tasty blue cheese sauce.  We were!  (This “welcome to Marlow’s” starter was even better than our purchased order of truffled parmesan fries.)

Mine That Bird wins the Derby!

Calvin Borel on a 50-1 longshot wins the Derby by 6 3/4 lengths.  That’s the second largest margin after Assault with an eight length margin in 1946.  Mine That Bird ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.66 minutes and paid $103.20 to win.  The second highest paying odds since Donerail won with 91-1 odds in 1913.  Giacamo, winner of the 2005 Derby, also won with 50-1 odds.

Calvin Borel expresses his dedication and the mindset that makes him a winner with a few simple words,  “I don’t care if it’s a $5,000 horse or a million dollar horse, I’m still going to give it 110 percent.”

Congratulations to Calvin Borel, Benny “Chip” Woolley, Mark Allen and Leonard Blach!!

Rogue — Chocolate Stout

First, I notice the smell of malt and chocolate/cocoa.  The malt has a deep dark roasted scent… very strong and powerful.  Then, the first taste was bitter.  Seriously bitter, in fact, so bitter it was hard to detect any of the underlying flavors.  The chocolate was buried deeply under the powerful bitterness of it.

Where Brooklyn Brewery’s Chocolate Stout has a lovely burnt caramel flavor, this flavor is overpowering bitterness.  This left me with a fairly one dimensional flavor.

But, on the bright side, this flavor would work very nicely in a braise for red meat (and even pork, if used sparingly).  This would also be a great beer to pair with fried foods (mmmMm fish & chips), grilled meats, and even cheese.  But, the overpowering bitterness could (and probably will) easily take center stage over the food.

And, the loaf of bread that I made with leftovers from the tasting was one of my best loaves to date.  I will be buying this again… some for drinking… some for cooking  & baking.
