The Setting: Entering through the doors, you are greeted by caricature covered walls. You may wander into the well-equipped bar and enjoy the perfect cocktail before moving on to the dining room. And, you might even find a tune to play on the bar’s jukebox.
The Staff: Friendly, inviting and professional
The Burger: We each sampled the burger. Both burgers arrived well-seasoned, beautifully charred, and cooked to the proper temperature. The bun is a large sesame seed bun that you’d consider standard fair for a burger. But, given the old school feel of the surroundings, we loved the charm and nostalgia of a great big fluffy sesame seed bun. And, there’s no doubting that these substantial burgers need a big bun. The burger alone is a very generous meal.
Also, noteworthy, the pickles served as one of the burger dressings. Tender lettuce, red onions and tomato slices were topped by thickly cut pickle slices that were truly memorable. We both noted, in unison, that the pickles were amazingly good. With a sweet and spicy zing, the crunchy pickle slices were gobbled up before we could even consider dressing the burger with them.
The Sides: (offered in full & half servings)
Fries — Perfectly crisp & thin
Onion Rings — Giant wedges of sweet Vidalia onions were generously battered and served crispy brown
Corn Pudding — Corn freshly cut from the cob and incorporated into a fluffy souffle-like pudding, this was a favorite. Really outstanding!
Star of the Day: The entire meal!

Manhattan Special is a carbonated esspresso coffee soda that actually tastes like espresso. It tastes far superior to any bottled or canned espresso-type product I’ve ever tasted. It has none of the watered down quality of other bottled coffee products I’ve tried. I’m really surprised that this isn’t more widely distributed. The taste is significantly superior to the taste of Starbuck’s canned product.
Manhattan Special

Chinotto uses the flavor of a small bitter citrus fruit of the same name for this interesting sparkling soda. It also makes a great addition to cockails. The bittersweet flavor adds interest and complexity to our favorite mixed drinks. Chinotto oranges are also used as a flavoring in Campari. But, the flavor of chinotto in Campari is far more intense and bitter than San Pellegrino’s soda.
Aranciata and Limonata sodas (orange and lemon sodas also sold under the San Pellegrino name) are easier to find. But, they lack the bitter orange flavor that makes Chinotto unique.
Hits: Custard tarts still warm from the oven, pineapple bread with sweet custard filling, a mildly sweet bread stuffed with shredded dry beef, shrimp sui mai and sticky rice in lotus leaf.
Misses: All the other steamed dumplings we ordered were so badly overcooked that they were literally mush… falling apart before we could even bite into them. And, the fillings were overcooked, tough and excessively chewy.
This inconsistent quality is surprising to us since this is one of the pricier dim sum restaurants in town. Dim Sum for two was more than $35.
Parking can also be an issue. On our last visit, one diner’s car was trapped in its parking space due to the unusually small spaces.

DiPalo’s
200 Grand Street
New York, NY
A holiday trip to NYC was just what the doctor ordered. It was delightful, hectic, nostalgic, jam-packed with activities, and making us hungry for more… soon!
Our favorite stops in Little Italy:
DiPalo’s (established 1925): 200 Grand St. — An incredibly popular Italian specialty foods shop that offers an assortment of cured meats, cheeses, honey, vinegars, and coffee.
Alleva Dairy (established 1892): 188 Grand St. — A fabulous Italian specialty foods shop that makes fresh ricotta & mozzarella.
Ferrara Bakery & Cafe (established 1892): 195 Grand St. (between Mulberry St & Mott St) — America’s first espresso bar offering the best lobster claw & chocolate covered cannoli in Little Italy. Their gelato is also quite good. The hazelnut and tiramisu are worth mentioning. (Do not confuse this cafe with La Bella Ferrara down the street, which is good, but, not as good)
Lombardi’s (established 1905): 32 Spring St. — Chronic lines of tourists and a need to rush service make pizza quality inconsistent from one visit to the next, but, still worth trying… at least once.
Our favorite stops in Chinatown:
Green Tea Cafe: 45 Mott St. — Incredibly high quality teas and tasty, unique bubble teas — They also offer an interesting assortment of food for late night dining or snacks.
OK 218 Restaurant: 218 Grand St — One of our favorite restaurants from this trip. This incredibly casual Chinatown restaurant offers up surprisingly high quality food. We enjoyed Peking Duck that was perfectly golden brown and crisp, snails in black bean sauce, and deep fried salt & pepper frog with a deep fried cilantro, garlic and green onion garnish. Everything was cooked to perfection and full of flavor.
88 Palace: 88 East Broadway — They offer dim sum specializing in pork and an amazing lunch buffet stocked with freshly made dishes. Our favorite dim sum items included fried pork in a sweet and spicy sauce that was phenomenal, tender sui mai and sticky rice in lotus leaf made with fresh chinese sausage. This was the most tender and delicious chinese sausage that I’ve ever tasted. We ended the meal with deep fried mantou served with a sweet condensed milk glaze for dipping.
Ping’s Seafood: 22 Mott St. — A bit of a hit and miss, the har gao and shrimp & scallop dumplings were overcooked. But, the shrimp sui mai were perfect.
AjiIchiban: 37 Mott St. — An amazing Hong Kong based shop that offers sweet and savory snacks. Candied kumquats, candied sweet plums, sesame brittle and fried sesame prawn rolls were our favorite treats.

Cocaine — Spicy Hot
On a recent road trip to New York City we found… Cocaine! A very potent energy supplement drink that we found quite effective. And, much tastier than Red Bull. The sweet/spicy flavor has the taste of sugar syrup spiked with vitamins and a dash of pepper.
A few of the vitamins and energy supplements included in the mix are:
280mg Caffeine
700mg Taurine
200mg D-Ribose
100mg Inositol
50mg L-Carnitine
300% RDI Vitamin B6
600% RDI Vitamin B12
100% RDI Vitamin C
Drink Cocaine
And, you’ve gotta love the warning on the can… Warning: This message is for the people who are too stupid to recognize the obvious. This product does not contain the drug cocaine (duh). This product is not intended to be an alternative to an illicit street drug, and anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot.
The Setting: A charming restaurant on the edge of the salt marshes bordering Savannah on the way to Tybee Island. Huge windows open to view the marshes in the daytime.
The Staff: Incredibly friendly, but, some are more experienced than others.
The Food: Amazingly Good! We’ve visited on a few occasions and every time we have to order the chargrilled oysters. They’re that good! Served on the half shell, the raw oysters are topped with a bit of parmesan cheese, herbs and a drizzle of butter. The bit of smoke perfectly compliments the oysters and their crust of cheese. Garlicky breadsticks accompany this generous starter. And, they’re the perfect medium to sop up the flavorful juices left in the shell.
We sampled a number of main dishes including the Fried Oysters, The Full Bubba, Shrimp & Grits, and Crab Stuffed Flounder. All were studies in careful preparation, beautiful presentation, and subtle, delicate flavors.
Fried Oysters: Coated in a delicate flour breading, they were cooked to perfection. But, for those who like a cornmeal coating these might be a bit too delicate and lacking of the crisp bite added by the cornmeal.
The Full Bubba: The most GINORMOUS seafood platter I’ve ever seen!! Complete with fish, shrimp, scallops, and oysters offering the same delicate flour breading. Even with nibbles being stolen, we couldn’t finish it all. Also, boasting some of the BEST scallops we’ve ever tasted. The scallops were so fresh (and perfectly cooked) that the sweet taste of the sea would burst in our mouths with every bite. (The last time we tasted scallops this fresh we were in a dockside restaurant in Alaska.)
Shrimp & Grits: Unusual, but, really really good. The shrimp were swimming in a rich, creamy sauce that was dotted with peppers, onions, leeks (i think) and a fine dice of tomato. The sauce had a hint of sweetness contributed by the leeks and sweet peppers. While it wasn’t what we expected, it became more addictive with each bite.
Crab Stuffed Flounder: I hate to repeat myself, but, it was cooked to perfection. The delicate flounder dusted with herb butter was not overpowered by the crab stuffing making this a surprisingly light entree. Incredibly addictive… making me crave another visit to the coast.
Stars of the Day: EVERYTHING!! But, the chargrilled oysters and perfect scallops deserve another mention. I can’t remember the last time a restaurant surprised us so thoroughly with it’s stellar quality ingredients and excellent execution. We can’t wait to go back to Savannah for more!
