Holeman & Finch Public House

The Setting:  Two intimate rooms surrounded by glass, one filled with hightop tables & a bar and the other offers tables & chairs with a handful of booths.

The Staff:  Friendly and attentive

The Food:  With temperatures dipping lower and lower, Holeman & Finch is just what the doctor ordered.  Rich, savory, and full of flavor… We sampled the house cured meats plate and pimento cheese with handmade crackers to start.  Our server hinted that the house cured meats might be available for sale in the future (at the nearby bakery, maybe? …I can only hope).  We followed this with the braised beef short rib with two perfectly fried onion rings on a bed of perfectly creamy potatoes and tabasco fried quail with a creamy tabasco sauce.  And, finally, we finished with a sticky toffee pudding that might just be the best version of this dish that I’ve ever had the fortune to taste.  Brown sugar buttery perfection served warm.  Each bite was coated with just enough ooey gooey brown sugar caramel sauce to saturate the “pudding”.  Tiny bits of pecan added a complexity that rounded out the decadently rich flavors of brown sugar and butter.

From start to finish, this was the perfect taste of fall.

Aurora Coffee

The Setting:  A small free-standing building on North Highland Avenue, parking can be tricky with only a handful of spots.  So, be prepared to park on the street and do some walking.  Inside, you’ll find a handful of tables and local art on the walls.

The Staff:  Friendly and helpful

The Coffee:  Amazingly good!  Rich, dark, full-bodied, smoky, complex… everything you want in a cup of coffee.  Aurora’s house blend is one of the best coffees to be had in Atlanta.  This is a coffee that reminds me why I love coffee.  No embellishments are needed.

An assortment of baked goods are available to accompany your coffee.  But, if you’re visiting on the weekend, the pickings might be slim if you arrive late.  But, who cares, you’re going for the coffee anyway!

The Art:  Paintings by Dave Rickett will be shown Oct 11 – Nov 14, Wildlife Photography by Edward Borg will be shown Nov 15 – Dec 5, and Paintings by Raoul Morren will be shown Dec 5 – Jan 2.

Check out Aurora Coffee’s website for art being shown at the Little Five Points location.

One Star Ranch — Alpharetta

The Setting:  Two very casual rooms offer seating in the Alpharetta location.  Live entertainment sets up in the room off of the bar and the doors to both rooms are likely to be open if the night is cool.

The Staff:  Helpful and friendly

The Food:  One Star Ranch offers a full menu of BBQ fare with beef & pork ribs, beef brisket, bbq pork, chicken, sausage and turkey.  We sampled the pork ribs, bbq pork, sausage, bbq chicken and brunswick stew.  Our meal was enjoyable and tasty.  The cheerful service made the meal even more enjoyable.  The tomato based bbq sauce was not one of my favorites.  And, unfortunately, it was poured over much of the meal.  It lacked the spicy character that my favorite bbq sauces possess.  The spicy version of their bbq sauce was an improvement, but, still didn’t make my favorites list.

Star of the Day:  Jalapeno cornbread baked in what I consider an old-fashioned southern style… crumbly, dense and chock full of jalapeno bits.  The wedge I received was gigantic, perfectly fresh and delicious!

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg and owlet’s wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

…Cool it with a baboon’s blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

Capturing the Spirit of Oakland — 2008 Halloween Tour

What better way to celebrate Halloween than to visit an historic cemetery and tour the grounds?  Especially when the narrated tour includes tales of the cemetary’s most famous residents.  Take in the architecture, gardens, sculptures and wind your way back in time as the stories of the past come to life.  And, as dusk turns to darkness see if the spirits join you on your tour!

Starting as a public burial ground with only 6 acres in 1850, Oakland Cemetery was designed as a rural garden cemetary.  By 1872, it had expanded to 48 acres.  Loved ones tending to family plots made Oakland Cemetery a popular destination for carriage rides and picnics.  Much of the care and devotion that went into maintaining the plots caused the formation of small gardens throughout the cemetary.  And, Atlanta’s first greenhouse was established at Oakland Cemetery in 1870.  The evolution of those gardens, sculptures and architecture has transformed Oakland Cemetery into what we see today.

So, don’t miss out on the chance to see Oakland Cemetery after dark… if you dare.
